  3. INTRODUCTION
  4.  
  5.   Xit provides a one button click to many desktop operations, such as closing a
  6.   window or displaying a task list. When first loaded, it adds a 'Close' button
  7.   (an 'X') on the left side of all titlebars and a 'LaunchPad', 'Task List' and
  8.   'Rollup' button on the right side. Pressing the close button does the same
  9.   action as pressing Alt-F4, or selecting the 'Close' option in the system menu.
  10.   All operations can also be assigned to the middle or right mouse buttons, or
  11.   to keys.
  12.  
  13.   Buttons are completely configurable: display on left or right side, and assign
  14.   any action to them. There are more than 30 available actions such as close,
  15.   open parent, copy, paste, rollup and user defined (assign any OS/2 or DOS
  16.   command to a button). The button bitmaps can also be modified.

  18. UPDATE WARNING + UN-INSTALL
  19.  
  20.   If you currently have an earlier version of Xit running, you MUST follow these
  21.   steps before installing Xit:
  22.  
  23.       1) Remove Xit from your startup folder or startup.cmd file.
  24.       2) Reboot - this is usually the only way to unload Xit's .dll file
  25.       3) You can now remove/backup the old Xit files
  26.       4) Proceed with the install

  45.   Copy the first six files to any directory on a local drive. Insure this
  46.   directory is in the LIBPATH statement in CONFIG.SYS or that the current
  47.   directory is indicated (LIBPATH=.). It's a good idea to place a shadow of the
  48.   program in the startup folder. Xit is now ready to run - no need to reboot.
  49.   Xit does not modify CONFIG.SYS. If you wish to edit the default button
  50.   bitmaps, you can unzip the bitmaps.zip file and use the OS/2 ICONEDIT.EXE
  51.   program to edit them. See the online help for more info (press F1). If you are
  52.   happy with the default bitmaps, you can delete the bitmaps.zip file (the
  53.   default bitmaps are stored in xitbmp.dll and xitbmp1.dll).

  55. USING XIT
  56.  
  57.   When Xit is loaded, it defaults to visible and enabled. You can change the
  58.   options by pressing the 'Options' button on the main Xit window.

  60.   To override the option settings, use these startup options:
  61.  
  62.                 /NM     - don't minimize/hide on startup
  63.                 /S      - suspend Xit on startup
  64.                 /Q      - quiet mode - disable hot key sounds
  65.                 /W      - disable warning/info messages
  66.  
  67.   To toggle Xits state, press the Enable/Suspend button. To exit Xit, press the
  68.   Terminate button. Read the online help for more info (press F1 anywhere).

  70.   Warning: If you set both 'Hide' and 'Remove from task list' options, you will
  71.   not be able to access the Xit window from the task list. If this happens,
  72.   press the right mouse button over any Xit titlebar button, then select 'Show'.

  74. OBTAINING XIT
  75.  
  76.   Xit is shareware and costs $15. The first time Xit is loaded, a registration
  77.   dialog is shown. For the remainder of the trial period, you can use Xit
  78.   fully - it is not crippled in any way. After the trial period, you must
  79.   register it if you decide to keep it. Check to online help for full
  80.   registration info.

  82.   For quick registration, press Help from the main Xit window, and double click on
  83.   the registration hot link. Read the instructions, then print out either the
  84.   BMT order form (credit card payments available) or the CodeSmith order form.

  108. PROBLEMS

  110.   If Xit does not work correctly with an application, you can prevent Xit from
  111.   hooking into the PM application by using the exception list (under Xit
  112.   options). When entering the filename, you need only enter the root name,
  113.   without the path or extension. For example, the file c:\subdir\crash.exe
  114.   would be entered as 'CRASH' in the list. Be sure to use UPPERCASE.
